While we are on with the covers I thought we may as well start off a thread for the top 10 illustrators, as its somewhat linked. I think pony books have been really lucky in having some really great illustrators, both British and American. My favourite is possibly Geoffrey Whittam but I also love many more like Lionel Ewards, Peter Biegel and Anne Bullen. Wesley Dennis and C W Anderson are possibly my fav US illustrators. Its going to be hard voting for the best ones!

Hae we got Geoffry Whittam who did some of the Punchbowl ones alongside Joan Wanklyn & of course one of the best illustraors ever (in my humble & controversial opinion) Charles Tunnicliffe who did some Punchbowls including covers & My Friend Flicka, not forgetting some of the wonderful Ladybird books, of which I have a huge collection!

I'm afraid I don't know any illustrators by name. Could someone post a few examples please?
King Of The Wind is the only book I remember being wowed by the pictures; I think I preferred to form images in my mind.

foxglove, King of the Wind is illustrated by Wesley Dennis (as are most of Marguerite Henry's books....they were quite a team!)
Most, if not all, of the illustrators named so far have pics on the Top 10 Best Cover thread, but the illustrators aren't named. I went back and added illustrator names to each of the pics that I posted....zip over and have a look (my post is on the first page of the thread).
Maybe if everyone could do that with their top 10 best illustrator posts.....add the illustrator name just before the pic?

Now, onto my list...sooo hard
Sam Savitt Peter Biegel C.W. Anderson Wesley Dennis Lionel Edwards Paul Brown Anne Bullen Sheila Rose Michael Lyne
Have to think on this a bit more.....some illustrators I've loved for one particular cover, but either they haven't done any other horse books or I haven't liked what they've done, and that hardly counts as a top 10 illustrator (Stanley Lloyd for Silver Snaffles, Raul Colon for I Rode a Horse of Milk White Jade spring to mind).

Sam Savitt, C. W. Anderson, I like KM Peyton's illustrations of her own titles!, Wesley Dennis, and really lovely current/contemporary work is being done for Stabenfeldt by Jennifer Bell -- covers awa interior illustrations are quite nice -- she takes the time to check the text and get the horses right as to color and features, and the illustrations exude character and personality.

Hi Rallycairn I agree that Jennifer Bell is a very talented illustrator and she definitely adds to the quality of the Stabenfeldt books.
Fizz, I mentioned Geoffrey Whittam in the OP - I love his stuff too, especially the Monica Edwards and the Jackie stories.
Has anyone mentioned Jeanne Mellin? Which reminds me I must add Mig O'The Moor to the best covers thread.
I will try and post some pics of various illustrators work in the next couple of days.

Has anyone mentioned Cecil Aldwin? He did nice pics for the Jerry books by Eleanor Helme.
A question - did Stuart Tresilian illustrate any pony books? I loved his work on the 'adventure' series by Enid Blyton but can't recall if he ever illustrated any horsy stories.

Forgot that one, another of my favourites.
Another I like is Cecil G. Trew who illustrated some of the Silver Eagle series.

Hi folks just a quick warning. The artist Victor Ambrus has objected to some of his illustrations being shown on a blog so it would be prudent not to put any of his illustrations on here if you are thinking of providing examples of artwork. I may have to remove any of his pics and possibly any of his covers from my website too.

Ooh funnily enough just remembered that Stuart Tresilian illustrated some of Mary Patchett's Brumby series, ironically was reminded when I went to remove a Victor Ambrus cover from the Mary P page!

oopsie - what a mardy [bottom] - I assume the offending blog post was maybe a little critical of his work possibly? Seems a bit much - is he going to try and sue ebay for all the listings which show his illustrations on book covers next

I love Mary Gernatt's covers - she did loads of the older Armada ones. They seemed to have so much energy in them. Anne Gordon who illustrated quite a few of Gillian Baxter's books, hasn't been mentioned yet, altho for me her illustrations are a little stiff. There are examples of both on my Gillian Baxter page: gillianbaxter.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/

Another illustrator whom I like but who is quite over-looked is Elisabeth Grant. She did the illustrations and covers for the Moors series as well as illustrating the Pantomime Ponies series by Gillian Baxter and the Caroline series by Caroline Akrill. Attachments:

I'd forgotten her - I like her work as well. She also did:
Black Nightshade - JPT To find a GOlden Pony - Amanda Gavin The Horses of Petrock - Vian Smith (cover) Horses in the Glen - G.Baxter (presumably not the pink covered one though)!! Ponies in the Attic - Irene Makin We Couldn't Leave Diana - Mary Treadgold (Penguin) Trouble at Ponyways (University of London Press, 1960), illus Elisabeth Grant
And apparently the frontispiece in the Jill books that had the laminated photo covers.

Thanks sarah I knew Elisabeth Grant had done some others but I couldnt think of them. She also did Gillian Baxter's donkey story Special Delivery.
The Silver Brumby books have reminded me of Ralph Thomson and Grace Huxtable who illustrated some of them - both excellent. Can anyone think of anything else they illustrated?

Bloomin annoyed as I compiled a short list of all the illustrators with examples of their work in case some people's memories needed jogging, then my blasted computer crashed and lost it all before I could save it! Havent got the heart (or time) to do it all again so if you want to check what books a particular illustrator has done visit this page on my website: ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/page3.htmlGo down to the google search box, highlight the ponymadbooklovers option and type in the name of the illustrator, it should bring up all the author pages whose work they have illustrated. Thought of a couple more too: Rosemary Robertson, Mary Shillabeer, Wendy Marchant and Leslie Atkinson. Will try and get poll up if my computer lets me!

Also added Thelwell, maybe he's not quite in the same category of illustrator as the others but love his cartoon ponies.
