Just found a copy of the book 'A Moon Stallion' by Brian Hayles. This was also a TV show back in the 1970s. You may be able to remember that a while back I had a request on my website for someone to tell me the name of the show as I couldn't remember it. Someone kindly supplied the information and then I came across the book.
Does anyone remember the show. It was set in the Vale of the White Horse where the Uffington chalk horse is, and was a mixture of horses and magic. This not suprisingly appealed to me at the time I watched it as my fav books were about ponies and magical goings on. It has somehow always stuck in my mind and I would love to visit the chalk horse one day.
Anyway got me thinking that there were really quite a few horsy TV series when I was young.
There were the adventures of Black Beauty. Who can forget the opening titles with the horse galloping and that theme tune (all together now...la laa, la la la la la la la laa laa....) And then there was Flambards. Well not completely horsy but there were lots of horses in it. I loved this show and recently watched it again on video. Still great! And then of course there was Follyfoot which was hugely popular. I remember there were lots of Follyfoot annuals as well. Bit of a naff theme tune tho!
Oh and also what about White Horses, did anyone else see that? I think I was watching it in the 1970s but it must have been a re-run as the show was filmed in the 1960s I think, a little bit before my time. I remember I used to love the theme tune. I even had the record! (Ah how times have changed, can't imagine any of the youth of today buying that!)
If you want to refresh your memory of these great old shows I have found some clips on youtube:
Follyfoot
Black Beauty
White horses
Must admit feeling a bit like blubbing when I heard those theme tunes again. Oh for the lost innocence of youth!!!
I can't help wondering if all those horsy TV shows influenced me in my love of horses. It certainly shows that ponies/horses were more popular in those days.
Oh and on a non-horsy note can anyone remember Lizzie Dripping and Kizzy, they were around at about the same time and were also great!

I loved the follyfoot Theme!
I remember there was a tv adaptation of Who sir Me sir by K M peyton, not strictly horsey and also does anyone remember watching Silas? The young boy (orphan?) who had a beautiful black pony and his older (I think) friend who had a grey he was too big for. Both rode bareback and it may have been slightly period if i remember correctly concerning clothes?

I loved those shows too Claire. I must be about the same age as you as I watched them all. I seem to remember Black Beauty being on a saturday teatime and watching it with all my family. Do you remember Catweazle, not horsey but it was out about the same time too.
I quite liked the follyfoots tune too!

I love Follyfoot. I have the entire series on DVD (both official and unofficial), and I have met someone who has met Gillian Blake. I have the entire series of books, and the annuals are on my want list.
I have Follyfoot's theme tune as a ringtone on my mobile.
Flambards is another I have on DVD, and the entire series of books.

White Horses - I loved it, must watch the clip, though on dial up it will take a while!!! Loved the Follyfoot tune I was an addict for cowboy shows because of the horses, never mind the stories, I just watched them for the horses, that is, until they suddenly moved the filming to Spain, and then all the horses and tack were WRONG, wrong, wrong. I drove people mad for a while going on about how that wasn't the right breed of horse, and that wasn't Western tack etc, then I gave up and watched reruns of PROPER cowboy films, Lone Ranger, Bonanza, Roy Rogers, Wagon Train etc, I'm not quite as old as this makes me sound!

Don't even know if white horses and The Moon Stallion are on DVD or video. If any-one knows give me a shout as would love to wallow in some horsy nostalgia ;D Unfortunately "White Horses" has been junked and will never appear on DVD (unless they turn up mislabelled in the BBC's archives, but that is highly unlikely). The Moon Stallion is available as an NTSC (American format) VHS tapes though. If you can play NTSC format tapes, then you are in luck. www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/6302287685/002-2816304-6040024?v=glance

Oh well, will just have to be content with Follyfoot! Sometimes it ends up like that British series end up on DVD/VHS in another country long before they are released in their original country. Going slightly off topic, it wasnt until Boxing Day last year that series 5 (and the Christmas specials) of the comedy Keeping Up Appearances was released. However, both the USA and Australia had it released 3 years previously. However, the UK had all 4 series on DVD since 2002, but not that one. I ended up buying 18 months ago the Christmas specials/Series 5 from Australia in the end. (I also prefer the packaging too.) It is not until this year that a boxset appeared, yet Australia/USA has had one for several years. Keeping Up Appearances is a BBC (UK) production, you wonder why it took the BBC so long to get them released on DVD.

It's madness isn't it, having to buy UK progs from other countries!
As for DVD releases I think the criteria they use is to release the DVD whenever I've just got hold of the video and am about to sell it on ebay!!! ;D

Don't worry Claire, there are still some old fossils about who only have video players! Am I imagining it - or was there an earlier TV series of Black Beauty? Before the one where he and owner were suddenly shipped to New Zealand. Also, anyone know anything about the TV series that has been made of the Saddle Club books, not sure I want to watch it, as I think the first thing they did was make all the horses the wrong colour! Oh yes, and does anyone remember Mr Ed - and whether there is any chance of getting hold of episodes of that - for all you really geriatric members out there who can sing the theme tune?? ( Hmmm, that'll be only me then! )

All I know is that Saddle Club books TV series did appear on here on CITV (when it was on ITV 1) and it starred some (now) ex Neighbours actors. As for Mr Ed, I dont remember it, but I do know most of the theme tune - my mum used to sing it for me when I was younger. She used to watch it.

trixiepony (and tinuveil) did you have the British Tv shows over there we were discussing like Black Beauty and Follyfoot, etc. The one Australian kids show I remember really well (tho not horsy) was Skippy the Kangaroo! Was there any Australian horsy kids shows? (no you cant count the silver brumby too modern!)

Im probably on my own here but a liked the Silver Brumby cartoon show, I thourt it was cute. Now I watched THAT and remember that it was the first time the silver brumbies had ever been portrayed as palominos! THEN, in my innocence, I thought it was just because the artists didn't like having to draw all white horses - NEXT thing, the Silver brumbies are officially all palominos!! I always blamed the cartoon, but NOW I know better. Thought like those for whom Black Boy is a piebald, the Silver Brumbies willl always be white to me!!

Changing the subject slightly just got hold of The Best of Black Beauty Series 2. First time I've watched it in years. My but he was a clever horse! But what gets me now is how they keep leaving him loose without tying him up and his bridle and saddle still on, don't even run up the stirrups or loosen girth. ALso he never seems to get rubbed down after hard work and they always gallop everywhere without warming him up or cooling him down, etc, etc. Dosent old age make you prosaic! Another thing I used to think the girl Jenny was really old (I think I was about 5 or so when I started watching them) but now find out she was pretty young.

Sorry forgot to answer your question kunuma, yes it is the series where he is in England. It does bring back the old nostalgia/lump in the throat when you hear that theme tune.
Anyone wants a copy of the show let me know.

Sory to upsete every one but to me the Silver Brumby was allways a palomino. The old drovers allways say a palomino was a creamy with white points and buckskins were creamys with bark points, so Thower was allways a palomino, even if the artist panterd him a white.

Is there anyone out there who remembers a TV series called My Friend Flicka? It was shown in the Anglia region in about 1960. It was in black and white and was based on the famous book. At about the same time there was an Australian series about two small boys and their horse called Endeavour and the adventures they had whilst running away. I cannot remember what it was called but it could have been based on an Australian book of the 40s or 50s. Can anyone remember seeing either of them?

I think the Flicka I am remembering is the first film, - the one where they used a gorgeous black stallion for Banner (even though Banner was a chestnut!!) I've always wondered whether that was the stallion that played Fury - now that was an old BW series!

According to my notes there was a 1957 TV version which sounds about the right time scale. Not sure who was in it tho. Will have a search on the net. There were films of both Flicka and Thunderhead starring Roddy McDowell made in the 40s havent seen them for donkeys years!
Not sure about the Australian show tho...any of our Aussie members know?

I googled 'my friend flicka' last night and found lots of info. The one I watched was produced in the mid 50's and the equine star was a pure bred chestnut arab mare named Wahana. She had two stunt doubles who were quarter horses and there were 39 episodes. It was shown mainly in the late 50's but there was a rerun in the 90's on the Disney Channel . Unfortunately I missed them!
